You are either a terrorist - or a child molester...

Just like most of the firearms cases that have made it to the higher courts recently, it always seems like they involve someone you would not want as a neighbor.

A Minnesota appeals court has ruled that the presence of encryption software on a computer may be viewed as evidence of criminal intent.

I think that's by design. Actually, by now I'm pretty well convinced it is.

After a few years of that, and now technology related things like this, the general population in the cattle yards will automatically regard all firearms owners as terrorists, and all computer owners (at least the security conscious ones...) as child molesters.

It's not a great leap to go from there to possession of certain books, magazines, video - the mere presence of which 'may be viewed as evidence of criminal intent'.

Watching the Presidential debates of October 1st, and the subsequent reactions to them, has left me once again with the sad realization that there are many millions of people who prefer a man who says the wrong things well over one who says the right things badly – and in the case of the first debates we are talking about saying very, very stupid things well and intelligent things very, very badly.

We’re going to look at what both men believe in respect to deterrence: whether their positions increase or decrease the likelihood of further attacks on the US.

That’s it. That’s all. That’s the sum total of this election for me. We’ve survived boobs and crooks and idiots and charlatans of all stripes and colors, struggled through booms and recessions, surpluses and deficits, and wars on poverty and drugs and crime and General Public Lasciviousness and come through just fine, and we will again.

But the nuclear destruction of the heart of Manhattan, or Long Beach Harbor, or the Capital mall – these things are serious business and as Sam Johnson once said, the prospect of being hanged in the morning tends to focus the mind.

Papa-Bear
1927 - 2003

Papa-Bear, as head of the intertribal Bear Clan, was a spiritual leader to over 3,000 American Indians and through the 'making-of-relatives' ceremony was the grandfather, father and brother to over 150 people in the 'non-indian' Bear Clan.

Many more people around the world knew Papa-Bear as either a Colorado Division of Wildlife Hunter Education instructor, or through his school, the Wilderness Institute of Survival Education ( W.I.S.E. ).

Papa-Bear helped to pass the law requiring hunter education classes in Colorado, and taught over 18,000 students since then. As a cold-weather travel safety and survival instructor, thousands more have learned safe highway and backcountry travel practices. As an active researcher in backcountry search and rescue techniques since the 1950's he helped develop many procedures that are now standard practice in search and rescue.

Papa-Bear passed away at 11:30a.m. Mountain Time at his home near Denver, Colorado.
